Volunteer and Paid Opportunities

Below are some but not all of the ways to get involved with the Houston Ultimate Community. Take a look and reach out to one our leadership team or join our slack team to get involved!

Volunteer Positions

Many of these roles have templates and tools to help you get started and our leadership team and current volunteers are available to set you up for success. Even with no prior experience in these roles, volunteering or working with HUC can be a successful and rewarding experience! 

Youth Tournament Director (TD)

Tournament directors enable youth to play against their neighbors near and far in a structured format. These can be round robin or bracket play (hat or team) events and span one or multiple days. This role would work closely with the HUC Youth director. 

The responsibilities of a TD can include: 

  • Researching field locations (field quality, size, amenities)
  • Making reservations (reimbursed or HUC pays up front)
  • Managing registrations, waivers, refunds 
  • Finalizing teams and eligibility, 
  • Making brackets and schedule
  • Recruiting and organizing volunteers/ staff for event
  • Planning “run of show” for tournament day (detailed schedule for set up each day to  take down)
  • Determining winners, giving prizes, gear etc

Youth League Commissioner 

League Commissioner is focused on developing relationships with schools and players at organizations the HUC Youth Director has already identified. League Commissioner responsibilities can include:

The responsibilities of a Youth League Commissioner can include: 

  • Managing registrations, waivers, refunds 
  • Finalizing teams and eligibility, 
  • Making schedule for league play – regular season and any playoffs
  • Communicating schedules with parents/guardians and school administration
  • Recruiting and organizing volunteers/ staff for event
  • Determining winners, giving prizes, gear etc.)

Youth Club Sponsor

This is an employee of a school/community organization who will sponsor an Ultimate Frisbee club or program at the school within the school’s rules and procedures. This could be a staff member, a teacher, or an admin. 

The Youth Club Sponsor should be able to help the external HUC volunteer coach or youth director with the following

  • Communicate with parents and students 
  • Reserve space for programming
  • Adhere to safety protocol of the school
  • Confirm and 
  • Determine registration and waiver process

Youth Coach

A coach for a school club or team will bring ultimate to a group of students, parents and staff through weekly practices/meetings during the school year. Schedule can be set by the coach or the school and will be conducted on school campuses. Youth School Coach will coordinate with the campus administration and the Youth Club Sponsor if there is one to confirm the expectations for practice schedule and logistics.

Requirements:

  • Coaches should have a current SafeSport training. 
  • Coaches must agree to and pass a background check per the requirements of the school/district
  • Coaches may also have to complete a back
  • A USAU or similar coaching certification is not required but nice to have. 

The responsibilities of a Youth Coach can include: 

  • Plan practices and competitions if available
  • Provide character and skill development opportunities to players
  • Communicate with other youth coaches for games
  • Help teams when they attend tournaments or games

HUC League – League Director

The league TD will be responsible for creating and organizing teams with assistance from HUC Leagues VP. The League TD will be the main point of contact for all registered player and potential pickup players. This could involve emails or in person interactions.

TD will be responsible for field setup/cleanup or designate a “day of” organizer as needed.

Lastly, TD will be responsible for updating scores and game times on HUC website. 

HUC League – “Day Of” Organizer

The “day of” organizer will be under the direction of the League Director. Their responsibilties may include: 

  • arriving early to set up fields and any HUC related banners/flags/etc that may be available (optional).
  • The “day of” organizer will oversee calling game time start and stop along with picking up cones/banners/flags.
  • Lastly, “day of” organizer will be the go-to official if teams need to be balanced. (rare)

Paid Positions

Marketing and Social Media Specialist

The marketing specialist will have a passion for reaching HUCs targeted audiences for the various programs and events offered throughout the year.  They will have a creative mindset or the ability to guide a creative to create assets for print and digital media. They know how to concisely tell a story to draw eyes to their posts.

Responsibilities of social media specialist can include

  • Creating/guide creation of marketing materials for HUC events and programs (digital and print)
  • Scheduling posts on social media outlets with relevant and timely content
  • Cultivating HUC’s social media network to increase followers/ likes
  • Identifying value-added physical or print marketing channels and see through execution of marketing campaign

Youth Ultimate Camp Coach 

HUC will offer summer camp opportunities for youth grades 3rd-12th. These camps will provide youth a chance to build skills with the disc, on the field and with their peers. These are day camps and will run ½ day or full day from 8:30-12 or 8:30 – 4pm. Times may vary. This is a paid position, with hourly wage set at $15 minimum. Coaches will be under direction of a Camp Director. Wages can be donated in-kind to HUC if you prefer to volunteer. 

Requirements:

  • Coaches should have a current SafeSport training (free). 
  • Coaches must agree to and pass a background check (free)
  • A USAU or similar coaching certification is not required but nice to have. 

and responsibilities can include:

  • Check in and check out campers
  • Basic First aid
  • Running drills
  • Playing games
  • Oversee lunch and breaks
