Mentor Guidelines

HUC Code of Conduct

Thanks for signing up to be a Mentor!

We have a wide range of experience and skill level.  Some players are new to the Houston area and are just looking to make contacts and new friendships.  Some players are brand new to the sport entirely. These players will need help with everything from understanding the rules and lingo, as well as basics in skill development (ie throwing, catching, cutting).  Other players will be a mix of the two or have some experience looking to learn more and refine their skills/knowledge of the game.

Mentor Expectations:

  • Take initiative in reaching out to your Mentee
    • Make an initial introduction
    • Every week, before, at, or after league
  • Understand what your Mentee wants out of the Mentor/Mentee relationship
    • Ask: How does your Mentee best receive feedback?
    • Ask: What goals does your Mentee have for the league?
      • If they don’t have any goals help them create some
  • Follow up regularly with Mentee’s progress on goals by scheduling times to do so, and set achievable steps to make progress towards achieving those goals
    • Ie if your mentee wants to get better at throwing…
      • Perhaps suggest you come early to practice different throws together before games
  • Share your knowledge and experience of the game
  • Help introduce Mentee into the greater Houston Ultimate Community
  • Address any problems, frustrations, or inequities the Mentee might be experiencing surrounding league
    • Ie perhaps they aren’t getting thrown to, and you can suggest different cutting techniques or timing to help them get open
    • Ie maybe they are getting looked off when they are open
    • empower your Mentee to help them build confidence in making their own calls when it comes to on and off field problem solving
    • Raise concerns with captains, tournament directors, or DEI committee if problems continue to arise
  • Be there for your Mentee! You get as much as you give in the Mentor/Mentee relationship! Fostering new players spreads the continued love for the game of ultimate.  Building up, developing, and welcoming new athletes today will elevate game play and competition for tomorrow.

This experience is what you make of it, so give it everything you’ve got! If purposeful effort is given, we believe this position will be extremely impactful. Thanks again– we can’t grow and enhance our community without volunteers like you!
